Raconteurs

These guys are such competent musicians it's a shame they allow someone other than Jack White to write some of their songs.  The fact that he's the one singing aside, it's never difficult to tell when Jack White is the creative force behind the songwriting.  When he's not, however, the Raconteurs output is consistently powerful music tainted by dreadfully cheesy songwriting. This discrepancy taints much of their most second album, Consolers of the Lonely.  Thankfully though, the album closes with this gem (this song builds to an amazing crescendo at the 5:35 mark):

And You'll Know Us by the Trail of Dead

The only Trail of Dead music I own is a mix CD that a friend made for me quite some time ago. It's really good; I've listened to it enough to know most of the lyrics, but, for some reason, I've never felt compelled to delve deeper into their catalogue.  Beyond that 17 song mix, I've never heard any of their stuff.  I read today that they have got a new album.  It didn't take much more digging to uncover this:

The National is easily the band I need to get into.  Been frequenting their Facespace page lately after they were indirectly recommended by Poodik. Here's a video of their's:

Apartment Story

When I first heard Dan Deacon, I thought his sound was pretty cool, but like so much electronic button pushing music, it wasn't interesting.   Well, Dan appears to have found a remedy for that.

Even if you typically ignore my musical recommendations, or gloss over the blog entries where I post videos, I implore you to listen to these performances.

And for good measure:

Intelligence

Just yesterday I had a conversation regarding various underacknowledged kinds of intelligence. Just now enjoyed this:

Various Shiny Things

Mick, your critique of their SNL performance is sort of addressed in this brief interview with Kyp Malone (big bearded guitar player). For those of you who don't read the comments to this blog until they pile up to such a degree that I respond to them in the form of a blog entry, Mick was unimpressed by their performance on SNL. I'm already sold on these guys -and also may have been under the influence of alcohol when I watched the performance- so I loved it.

It's interesting. For all the fanfare and accolades, I don't know anyone that loves these guys like I do. Crow and Mick, for example, are reluctant naysayers. My old man has said, "they have their own sound", but also, "it's not something I'd seek out." Whatever. He's the naysayer's naysayer.

It's a Friday night.  I dropped Moose and a friend of hers off at a bar to meet up with some of their former co-workers, then raced home to wrack up as much $$$/points as were necessary to unlock a four song Tool concert on Guitar Hero, World Tour.  Now I'm blogging.  I'm a Tool.

Mackin wrote the following to a mass email chain comprised of our friends from college:

Does any like Joe Rogan? I can assume some people like Seamus don't like him because he speaks his mind in a way that makes him egotistical and pig headed eventhough he is very knowledgable. And others like Kevin and Murphy love him because he was on their favorite show "News Radio." Well, that last was a stretch. Any who, he wrote an open letter to Kellogs re: Michael Phillips. Good read

No.  It's not.

Rycree astutely responded:

I'm gonna give Seamus the benefit of the doubt and guess he doesn't like him because this guy is a moron.

Mackin was half right.  I can't stand Joe Rogan. I hate Joe Rogan not because he speaks his mind in an egotistical manner but because he's always so deftly cast as the American everyman whether he's hosting some in your face reality show or ultimate fighting... and I see myself in nothing about that frat boy fuck.

My having conveyed that to the recipients of the aforementioned email chain, Emmett, who I'm 99% sure doesn't know who Joe Rogan is, added his two cents, comparing me to Joe Rogan.

Your dislike of Joe Rogan because he speaks his mind and is pigheaded even though he is knowledgeable... I thought maybe you'd be jealous of the things that make your blog so enjoyable....

I'm devastated.  I'm a poor man's Joe Fuckin' Rogan.
